Satoshi Kon

Kon made his manga debut in 1984 while in college, with Toriko. He wrote the script for a live action film, World Apartment Horror, and worked as a layout artist for Roujin Z, in 1991. Kon continued to work in manga and anime, eventually working on Magnetic Rose in the film Memories as a layout artist, script-writer and art director. He made his anime film debut with Perfect Blue in 1997. Despite all his work and influences Kon claimed to be largely unfamiliar with Japanese film.

Perfect Blue (1997)

Based on Yoshikazu Takeushi’s novel of the same name, Kon was permitted to make any changed he wanted with the film as long as he kept the themes of “pop idol”, “horror”, and “stalker”.

Millennium Actress (2001)

This was the first film Susumu Hirasawa composed for Kon.

Tokyo Godfathers (2003)

Paprika (2006)

Kon had considered adapting Paprika, Yasutaka Tsutsui’s novel, into a film after Perfect Blue’s release. Due to Rex Entertainment, Perfect Blue’s distribution company, going bankrupt, plans for Paprika were halted.


Kon teamed up with Mamoru Oshii and Makoto Shinkai to create the 2007 NHK television production Ani*Kuri15,for which Kon created the short Ohayō.
